1. Colour Schemes

When thinking of colours to decorate your room in think of the things you love. If you like the countryside you may like greens and neutral tones, if you like the seaside you may be more in tune with blues and creams. Think about your hobbies and what you like to do in your spare time, these ideas can create the background to your room theme. If you have a favourite painting or, vase or other accessory you can use this item to be the base of your colour scheme on.

2. Flooring

Think about the room use and what activies will be undertaken in the room. Do you have pets or children? Wood floors are becomming extremely popular and as they last for years with little sign or wear and tear they are a good option to explore. Tiling floors can be cold and clinical in certain rooms but underfloor heating is a increasingly popular option for tiled floors. Carpet can be the most comfortable flooring option but research into mixes is important for wear and tear. Scotchguarding a carpet is a great way to prolong the look and practicality or a carpet.

3. Lighting

The atmosphere you want to create in a room can be determined by the lighting options you choose. Spot lighting can be practical in kitchens and bathrooms but quite harsh in other rooms. Wall lights and centre lights are more atmospheric for lounges and dining rooms. Table and floor lamps are extremely good atmospheric lighting options and should be used with low voltage bulbs in all cases.

4. Furniture

Furnishing a property can be extremly costly and you really need to shop around for styles and deals. Define your room with furniture but don't put too much furniture in the room. Your room will feel smaller the more you have in it so chose items very carefully. Make sure each piece has a purpose whether practical or decorative.

5. Accessories

The choosing of accessories will create the finishing touches for your room. Cushions, window dressings, wall art, throws, rugs, vases and personal effects will help to create the look you are after. Remember the rules, complement and co-ordinate. Rooms don't need to match, if you co-ordinate colours you create much more depth and interest in your room.
